Areas of focus and expertise

Clients come to me for many reasons, but these are themes in which I have a special interest...

The effects of abuse

Abuse can take many forms - sexual, emotional, verbal, psychological. It can be obvious and vivid in our lives, or insidious. It's rooted in relationships - what happens between ourselves and others, be they a current or previous partner, a workplace colleague or boss, a parent perhaps. It might be very current in your life, destabilising, frightening and hollowing you out. Or maybe the abuse happened a long time ago - we try and move on but something remains scarred inside that can be difficult to get past.

Sometimes we can be abused by whole systems, or cultures - if you are a member of a minority group perhaps you'll recognise the toxic drumbeat of racism, homophobia, transphobia, or ableism?

In a safe and private space, we can work together to approach and heal the hurt. This can mean gradually re-approaching it, meeting it, and, step by step releasing the pressure to reduce its power. If the abuse is happening now, we can work together to gently talk over your feelings, strategies, options. If it's the work of society, or prejudice, or bigotry, we can work on stopping that toxicity entering into you, and help you develop your resilience and self-belief.

I bring both my training and my own lived experience to this work.

Working with sexual and gender identity

I work compassionately and affirmatively with those who are asking questions about their own sexual or gender identity. I don't believe that any sexual or gender identity is any more valid than any other - if this is something that you are dealing with you'll find in me someone who will work to help you find the answers that makes sense to you.

Further, those who have come out as part of the LGBTQ+ community sometimes have to deal with not only the regular day-to-day stresses of life, but the oppressive weight of others' judgments. Parents, partners, or peer group can all load you up with shame and cripple your self-love. These days, politicians and the media seem engaged in a violent witch-hunt of trans people, which can take a heavy toll on mental health.

I'm hear to listen and to help you find strength.
